The Golf Course Became My Happy Place by Carson Klawonn
“Golf is more than just a game. I didn’t have the most normal introduction to the game of golf, as I grew up playing pretty much every sport besides golf. Then, when I was 12, I was diagnosed with leukemia. The leukemia made my body very weak and I was unable to play any of the sports that I had played my entire life. My father and brother played golf, and it seemed like something I would be able to do.
I ended up falling in love with the game and would go to the range and play a hole or two whenever I was feeling strong enough. The golf course became my happy place. It was somewhere I could go and not have to think about everything else that was happening in my life; I just had to think about hitting a little white ball. It was somewhere I could go where people didn’t treat me differently or constantly ask questions. Golf was something I could do to find peace and not have to worry about anything.”
